Ancestors of the MacDonalds can be traced back to the ancient Scottish kingdom of Dalreida which was founded by Carby Riada, one of the sons of the 111th king of Ireland. The name MacDonald is the Anglicized version of Mac Dhomhnuill, a Gaelic name. In 844 the Dalreidans joined forces with their main rivals the Picts and their power increased. The catalyst was Kennth MacAlpin, a half-Dalreidan and half-Pict who many recognize as the first king of Scotland.
The name MacDonald was first found in Kintyre. Spelling wasn’t considered to be important in those days and various variations of the name can be found with McDonald and Macdonald amongst the most common.
